Log cabins, saunas & BBQ huts

Log cabin installation

Setting up a barbecue hut - the other log cabins/huts have similar installation

  • Tools required:
    1. metric measure
    2. level
    3. battery drill
    4. hammer
    5. handsaw
    6. carpet knife

Setting up the wall blocks

Setting up the wall blocks can be started by lifting up, for example a wall with a doorway (wall block with a door gap), to vertical direction over sockle board and at around 20mm distance of the boards inner surface. Next lift up a wall block equipped with stationary window and put it on the top of the nearest sockle board.

Push the blocks towards each other so that the skewed vertical borders laid carefully towards each other as far as the height and width. Attach blocks on both sides with three 5.0x80mm screws. (see screw-mounting of the outer corners of the hut)

After that set up a blind wall block besides a window panel block and attach it just like above.
Next a wall block with opening light window, then again a blind wall block and finally a block equipped with stationary window, which is still attached to the other side of the first settled block.

Check out all crosswise measurements of the opposite corners and if needed, fix up corners to equal in other words about to 3820mm.

Corner mouldings of the wall blocks (mouldings equipped with strip) are being first attached in pairs by nailing them with oblique sides and so formed V-mouldings by both sides with three 5.0x70mm screws to the salient corners of wall blocks.

Narrow cover strips are being nailed still to the re-entrant corners of the wall blocks.

Installing the roof blocks

Installing the roof is started by installing a collar board with V-channel. Collar boards are being settled up horizontally over wall blocks and strips with V-channel upside and about 5 mm. to inside interior surface of the wall. (see A screw mounting of the hut’s eave)

Collar boards are being pushed carefully by endings into each other so that a unbroken, parallel with wall, circle is formed and then they are being attached into upper edges of the wall with four 5.0x80mm screws.

A collar board which comes to the doorway is already shortened from the centres. Between endings should remain a 870mm. gap for forward edge of door frames installed minor roof bearing boards.

In this context triangle-shaped corner blocks are attached to internal corners of collar boards with two 5.0x70mm screws so that upper surfaces are even. Mounting of roof panes can be completed by two different ways for example depending of labour force.

Panes can be attached first to each other by pairs on the straight base and then install them over collar boards as complete panes or install always a half at a time so they are much light to handle. In this instruction the latter method is used. A bottom end of a first half of a pane is lifted to the V-channel of a collar board and a top end is supported with a 2670mm length vertical shuttering to the angle of 45 degrees. Another half of a pane is lifted at the same way beside this so that pane boards are settled axial carefully with the height of whole breast and after that the halves are attached each other with three 5.0x70mm screws on the one side and with two screws on the other side of a tier (see A screw mounting of the roof panes).

A pane beside is assembled the same way. After that the panes are attached each other on their oblique corner altogether with five 5.0x70mm screws so that the corner of collar boards and the corner of roof panes became exactly match up and the oblique corners of panes are set carefully together with their whole length. This is continued as long as all of the roof panes are set at right place and attached each other. Note - To a roof pane that comes at the doorway there is a cutting, width of 870mm, for the door.

From tiers of pane halves the blocks that worked as a transport support must be off-sawed along the edges of opening before mounting. So formed roof is attached to collar boards from underside (at the place of V-channel) with four 5.0x70mm screws per pane.

Finally plywood eaves will be attached to the roof panes with eleven 4.5x45mm screws per pane.

Installing door & minor roof

Installing a door is started by cutting of a upper building log which have been a transport support log for a wall block with a doorway by the width of a doorway which means about 810mm off-sawing.

After cutting, a framework of a door is attached by both sides with two 5.0x70mm screws to the endings of the wall logs so that the bottom part of the frame lays over the lowest log. A frame will belong to the middle of the opening and the outer surface of the frame exactly to the same level with the outer surfaces of the wall logs (see The door of the hut and a minor roof).

Then a door is lifted up for its hinges, an operation of the door is checked out and the agreements of the gaps are also checked out. If required, all the necessary adjustments can be done.

Next the supporting boards of the minor roof are attached outside over a joint, which is formed by vertical post and the endings of the wall logs, with two 5.0x80mm screws so that the outer width of the boards will become about 870mm (according to cutting of a collar board) and the upper endings of the boards will become exactly to the same height with the upper edge of door frame.

After that an installation of the minor roof is started by attaching another of the triangular shaped frames with their front panels to the leading edge of the minor roofs lower panel with two 4.5x45mm screws so that they match with outer endings of the panels.
Another triangular frame is attached to lower panels with two 4.5x45mm screws so that it goes towards with its bottom edge to outer edge of the batten that works as a nailing suspender.

That way formed structure is lifted up to the top of the upper frame of the door just to the middle of the opening and after that the door is pushed horizontally towards the roof pane, which is located in upper edge of the edge of roof panes opening, and then it is attached from outside through triangular frame and roof panel right to the edge course with two 5.0x80mm screws.

The straightness of the roof pane is good to check at this context because a pane can be erected along this mounting. A structure is attached also to the both of the minor roofs supporting board with two 4.5x45mm screws from outside. Next the roof panes made of plywood are being attached totally with eight 4.5x45mm screws to triangular frames so that the oblique endings of the panes lay towards pane boards and the upper edges form a right angle with square batten which goes to the roof.

Finally the front verge boards are being attached totally with four 4.5x45mm screws from outside to minor roofs panes for about 10mm distance of the outer edge.

Installing the roofing felts

There are detailed instructions of installing roofing felts inside each felt package. It is helpful to read entire instructions before starting the installation process. It is suitable to start the installation of a barbeque hut from the place of the complete panes.

Note - The roofing felt width of 220mm is meant to be placed to the eaves and outer creases of the major roof and the roofing felt8 width of 270mm for creases of minor roof and chimney.

It is suitable to install and cut the felt pieces according to fallowing picture, CUTTING THE ROOFING FELTS OF A BARBEQUE HUT. Therefore two extra strips are always remained so they can be used to cover the minor roof.

Installing the chimney

The bodywork of the chimney is assembled first on the ground by combining the plywood sides of the chimney to hexagonal shape with two 5.0x70mm screws/corner. Screws are settled to the place of courses so that they are parallel to the courses (see Screw mounting of the hut’s chimney)

So formed bodywork is covered with the roofing felt so that the felt reaches at least 10 cm over bodywork’s lower edge (inside course further from the edge).
Also at the same time the hood of the chimney is covered with roofing felt.

The hood is hinged with two hinges to the upper edge of the bodywork and a chain that controls the opening radius of the door is also attached to right place.
Then the chimney is installed to the middle of the hole that is located on the roof and mounted to the roof panes from inside with four 5.0x80 mm screws, which are placed about 20 mm of distance from the middle line of the pane. This mounting is meant to erect also the upper endings of the roof panes.

Installing the benches

Installing the benches is started by attaching at the right spot the longer supporting courses (3pcs), which are attached to the walls by their endings (see Benches of the hut).
The courses are settled to the same direction with the wall and to the walls with two 4.5x45mm screws to the height ordered by vertical supports. They are attached by their ends with one 5.0x70mm screw (see Screw mounting of the courses of the benches of the hut).
After that the shorter support courses (2pcs) are also attached to the same direction with the walls, but by their endings with one 5.0x70mm screw to the previous courses and the surfaces to same level.

Then the short supporting courses are mounted between the walls and the longer courses so that to the walls near the corners the vertical supports are attached also under these endings.
Next the bench boards are installed. Boards come to the same direction with the walls and between oblique endings of them should remain a gap width of 10 mm. Front bench boards are attached to their supporting courses with three, and the farthest boards with two 5.0x70mm screws. Finally the laying flaps (3pcs) are hinged to the edge of the doorway benches and rear bench.

Installing the floor & finishing teh battening

Floor grates are installed circular around the barbeque place so that the wider grate is settled in front of doorway. The delivery package is also added a group of battens made for interior lining like the battens made for roof panes joints or the interior lining battens of doorway's edges. The battens are fitted and finally nailed at place.
